Creative Arts Therapy
Creative Arts therapy uses the innate creative instincts that live within all people to facilitate self exploration, self expression and growth. Some people feel that they are not creative, this is not true. We all improvise, nobody gets a script for life. We all put on our work “character” and then shift to a new character when we are out with friends on a Friday night. We wear costumes and masks, some comfort while others confine. When we jump for joy or drag our feet, this is the body expressing itself like a dancer. These are all creative process happening naturally.
The main difference between Creative Arts therapy and traditional talk therapy is the use of more than just spoken language as a way to connect, express ones inner world and examine ones self.
In sessions, a client feeling unsafe might build a blanket fort in order to experience the agency of creation mixed with the child like comfort of being safe and contained. Clients who are having problems in relationships might re-enact past interactions and improvise new ways of being in order to test out possible alternate paths moving forward. Repetitive thoughts or big feelings can be turned into characters who can then be listened to. What do the characters of Competitiveness, Anxiety or Anger need us to know in order for them to have less control over our lives?
Creative Arts therapy works well for Children and Adults. For children, it lets them express themselves and process emotions in a play based modality, which doesn’t necessarily need words to be effective. For adults, creative arts therapy can help clients reconnect with their feelings and examine big ideas and events in a gentle and playful way that opens up new avenues of knowing. Artistic expression is a powerful way to free stuck feelings and engage with the spontaneous energy of being in the moment.
